Bruce Murray Holt, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, in Raymond, Alberta. His life was one marked by quiet strength, helping others, and a deep, steady love for people and community.
Bruce was born during a blizzard in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Murray and Vella Holt, who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and service that would shape his entire life. He carried those values with him into adulthood and lived them every day of his life.
A devoted schoolteacher by profession, Bruce believed deeply in the power of education and encouragement. He didn't just teach lessons—he taught people. Many remember him for his patience, his humor, and his genuine interest in seeing others succeed. Learning, to Bruce, was something to be shared freely, just like his time and talents.
Outside the classroom, Bruce was widely known for his generosity and willingness to help. If someone was locked out, stuck, or simply in need, Bruce was often the first to show up—tools in hand, ready to solve the problem. His locksmithing skills became legendary, but even more memorable was his readiness to serve without expecting anything in return. He gave because that was who he was.
Bruce found great joy in his family, who were the center of his life. He is lovingly survived by his brothers, Max Holt and Charlie Holt; his sisters, Beth Sunada and Marie Stailey; and his children: Jim Holt (Beate Unger), Ian Holt (Bonita Walburger), and Heather Holt (Cem Unal). "Grandpa Boof" was a proud and devoted grandfather to Joshua Holt (Leila), Tessa Holt, Jason Holt, Morgan Vazquez (Avery), Daniel Holt, Jared Holt, and Garion Holt, and a delighted great-grandfather to Mateo, Ezra, and Emma, who brought him endless smiles.
Bruce was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Dianne Martin Holt, whom he missed dearly and spoke of often. Their love remained a guiding presence in his life and their reunion this week has to be quite legendary.
Bruce will be remembered for his warmth, his laughter, his quiet acts of service, and the way he made people feel seen and cared for. His life reminds us that joy is found in helping others, in showing up, and in choosing kindness again and again.
Bruce's legacy lives on in the many lives he touched—and in every lock opened, lesson taught, and kindness given.
